Benefits of Meal Prepping for RVing
We made one mistake as beginner RVers – trying to make all of our meals once we got to the campsite. I’m here to tell you – it can be way more trouble than it’s worth! We did develop a few easy RV cooking hacks along the way, which helped tremendously. However, there are many advantages to meal prepping your food to take camping, especially if you’re cooking for the whole family.
It Saves Time
If you’re investing time in taking a trip with your loved ones, the last thing you want to be doing is spending hours preparing meals in your RV. Sure, it takes time to make these recipes ahead of time, but this allows you to focus on making family memories and fully living in the moment while on your trip.

Cuts Down on Food Costs
If you are operating on a strict food budget, meal prepping your RV food can cut down drastically on costs. For example, you can easily purchase large packages of chicken or ground beef and prepare bulk meals. Larger families probably won’t have much in the way of leftovers, but you can always freeze extras for later trips.
Essential RV Meal Prep Supplies
We often use our pressure cooker or slow cooker when meal prepping because these methods make it easy to cook large portions. However, many pressure cookers also have a slow cooking function, which is the best of both worlds! Here are some other essential RV meal prep supplies:
- Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil – This kind is much more durable than regular tin foil, especially if you’re preparing foil packet meals.
- Ziploc Freezer Bags (Gallon and Quart Sizes) – Useful for freezing soups or storing breakfast bars, cookies, etc.
- Plastic Storage Containers – We recommend sturdy plastic ones, as many glass containers can add to the weight of your RV.
- Mason Jars – Perfect for overnight oats recipes! (You can opt for plastic jars if you don’t want to take the glass jars.)
- Food Wrap – Individually wrap snacks and leftovers.
- Well-Insulated Cooler – You can fill your cooler with ice once you get to the campsite and divide the food up there, or you can use it to store extra food while traveling.
Once you’ve gathered together the camping meal prep essentials, it is time to start cooking. The following delicious camper cooking ideas are sure to be a hit on your next adventure!
