We are currently in the middle of packing for our next camping trip. Our destination is not a new one for us, but definitely a family favorite. We are going to take the travel trailer down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for a week. As we look forward to days of lazy, relaxing beach time, we brainstormed some of our favorite SIMPLE classic camping activities that we can add to our vacation bucket list.
Classic Camping Activities Bucket List
Camping offers a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, providing an opportunity to reconnect with nature and savor the simpler pleasures. Whether you’re an experienced camper or a novice setting out for the first time, there are plenty of activities to enjoy that enhance the camping experience. Here are ten popular activities that you can consider for your next camping trip. All of these activities can be enjoyed by any type of camper – tent, RV, or even cabin rental!
1. Hiking: Explore the Beauty of Nature
One of the most invigorating activities to enjoy while camping is hiking. Exploring nearby trails allows you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty surrounding your campsite. The rustling leaves, chirping birds, and stunning vistas create a serene environment perfect for unwinding and appreciating the great outdoors.
Pack a daypack with essentials like water, snacks, a map, and a camera to capture the breathtaking views. Don’t forget to wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots and dress in layers to adapt to changing weather conditions. My favorite hiking shoes are my Keens!
Some helpful hiking supplies:
- Proper footwear
- Lightweight backpack (to hold supplies)
- Hydration system (water bottle or hydration backpack)
- Small first aid kit
- Protein/Carb rich snacks for fuel
- Bear spray
2. Fishing
Fishing is a classic camping activity that offers both relaxation and the thrill of the catch. Whether you’re by a lake, river, or stream, casting a line and waiting for a bite can be a meditative experience. Fishing is also a great way to bond with family and friends as you share stories and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Make sure to check local fishing regulations and obtain the necessary permits. Pack your fishing gear, bait, and a cooler if you want to keep your catch fresh for cooking over the campfire later.
Some helpful fishing supplies:
- Quality rod and reel
- Tackle Box with Assorted Tackle
- Fishing Line (and an extra spool or two!)
- Live bait or lures (check the campground store for live bait!)
- Polarized sunglasses
3. Campfire Cooking
Whether you have roast a single marshmallow over a campfire, or cook up a whole entree, give campfire cooking a try! Campfire cooking allows you to create delicious meals with a rustic twist. We have enjoyed many different foods cooked over the campfire!
Gather around the campfire and enjoy the mouthwatering aromas of your outdoor feast. Don’t forget to pack essential cooking tools like skewers, foil, and a cast-iron skillet to make your campfire culinary adventures a success.

4. Stargazing
One of the most magical aspects of camping is the opportunity to stargaze away from city lights. The night sky comes alive with twinkling stars, planets, and constellations. Satellites are surprisingly easy (and plentiful) to see as they glide across the sky.
Lay back on a blanket or reclining chair, and let the wonders of the universe unfold before your eyes. Bring a star chart or a stargazing app (we love Skyview Lite) to help identify constellations and learn more about the celestial bodies above. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a meteor shower, adding an extra touch of magic to your camping experience.
Some helpful stargazing supplies:
- Comfy, water-resistant blanket
- Bug spray
- Star chart or stargazing app on your phone
- Red Light Flashlight (allows you to see without wrecking your nighttime vision)
- Portable telescope
5. Wildlife Watching
Camping offers a front-row seat to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. From birds and squirrels to deer and raccoons, the diversity of wildlife can be fascinating. Bring a pair of binoculars for a closer look and a field guide to help identify different species. Depending on where you are camping, you can really check off a long list of wildlife unique to the area.
Remember to respect the animals’ space and observe them from a distance. Early mornings and late afternoons are often the best times for wildlife watching, as many animals are more active during these periods.
Some helpful animal watching supplies:
- Binoculars
- Wildlife guide for that specific geographic location
- Bug spray
- Notebook and pen (for jotting down your observations)
- Folding chair
6. Water Activities
If your campsite is near a lake or river, take advantage of the water activities available. Swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding are excellent ways to cool off and add excitement to your camping trip. These activities provide a refreshing break from the summer heat and offer a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape.
Always prioritize safety by wearing life jackets and being aware of the water conditions before diving in.

7. Nature Crafts: Get Creative with Nature
Engage your creative side by making nature crafts using materials found around your campsite. Collect leaves, rocks, sticks, and flowers to create unique pieces of art. Try making a nature journal where you can press leaves and flowers, draw sketches, and write about your observations. We love making flower portraits with petals, leaves, twigs, etc.
Rock painting is another fun activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. These crafts not only provide entertainment but also allow you to bring a piece of nature’s beauty home with you.
8. Photography
Photography is a wonderful way to document your camping adventures and capture the beauty of nature. Whether you’re using a professional camera or a smartphone, take the time to photograph the landscapes, wildlife, and candid moments with your fellow campers.
Experiment with different angles and lighting to create stunning images. These photos will serve as lasting memories of your trip and can be shared with friends and family to inspire their own camping excursions.
9. Outdoor Games
Outdoor games are perfect for bringing people together and adding a lot of fun to your camping trip. Pack games and equipment like a frisbee, cornhole, and badminton for some friendly competition. Scavenger hunts are also a hit, especially with kids, as they explore the area searching for specific items. These games encourage physical activity and provide an opportunity to bond with your camping companions. Plus, they’re a great way to keep everyone entertained during downtime.
10. Reading and Relaxing
One of the greatest pleasures of camping is the chance to slow down and relax. Bring a good book, find a comfortable spot, and lose yourself in a captivating story.
Hammocks are perfect for lounging and enjoying the tranquil surroundings. Listening to the sounds of nature, from the gentle rustling of leaves to the chirping of birds, creates a soothing atmosphere for relaxation. Whether you’re reading, napping, or simply daydreaming, taking the time to unwind is an essential part of the camping experience.
