Not getting a great night’s sleep in your home away from home? Perhaps due to a very uncomfortable mattress? We have rounded up the best short queen mattress options for your consideration!

Easy RV Mattress Upgrades

If you have hung out on this site for more than a few minutes, you might have come across a mention of our favorite RV upgrade to date: upgrading our camper mattress. That’s because I have mentioned the upgrade in a number of posts. Our factory-issued mattress was a horrid concoction of plastic mesh and we never got a comfortable night of sleep on it. We picked up a new mattress online and never looked back.

I’m always surprised when chatting with fellow RVing friends who have not considered a new mattress for their camper. They will list all of the solutions that they have tried: pillowtop mattresses, foam eggcrate mattress toppers, extra comforters, etc. While these things might help to take the edge off of a horribly unsupportive mattress, it likely won’t fix the issue.

One of the biggest reasons people give for not upgrading their mattress is cost. If cost is what is holding you back, know that there are many different price points! Our mattress cost $200 and I get a fantastic night of sleep on it! Our mattress feels like a luxury upgrade, when in reality, it was a bargain. You can find a short queen bed mattress from a variety of manufacturers over a broad price range ($160 – $800+).

If you are not satisfied with the standard mattress that came with your camper, keep reading!

Short Queen Mattress Size is the RV Standard

When it comes to most typical camper beds, the standard size mattress is a Short Queen mattress. This is not a solid rule though, so please make sure that you are certain that your RV mattress is a short queen size.

We have a 28 foot travel trailer and the bedroom has a short queen mattress.

You will want to measure your rv mattress size and your bed frame before you begin shopping for something new. Having accurate measurements are essential to ensure a great fit with your new mattress.

Short Queen Dimensions and Mattress Sizes

As you can infer from the name, a short queen mattress is a bit shorter than a traditional queen.

How do they compare?

Traditional queen mattress dimensions: 60 inches wide by  80 inches long

Short queen mattress dimensions: 60 inches wide by  75 inches long

I know that 5 inches doesn’t seem like a big deal, but all RVers know that every inch of space is precious in a camper! Many features in an RV are smaller than versions you might find in a traditional home. RV beds are no different.

Vacuum-sealed Memory Foam Mattresses

One thing that made the mattress upgrade process seem daunting was the concern that a new mattress might be difficult to fit inside of our camper door. So rather than risk arriving that the camper a new mattress that we couldn’t get inside, we turned to the internet.  We started to search for a short queen mattress that would arrive vacuum-sealed and much smaller than its eventual expanded form.

If you have never purchased one of these mattresses, they are pretty  awesome. They arrive in compressed form with most of the air having been sucked out of the bag. Only after you cut the bag open does the air rush in and the mattress expands.

We have now purchased several memory foam mattresses-in-a-box and use them in our home. Most of them are the Zinus brand, which is the same as our RV mattress. I can speak to their quality and durability as they have held up to nightly sleep from my kids, husband and I.  We own an array of different sizes: 2 twins, a full-size, a king mattress and of course, the short queen mattress in the camper.

My husband and I are both side sleepers and we have found these memory foam mattress options to be incredibly comfortable and supportive.

How to Pick the Best Mattress for YOU!

I truly think that mattress preference is one of the most personalized objects a person can purchase. When you research different types of mattresses, there are a lot of things to keep in mind before you decide on THE ONE.

  • Do you have back or spine issues? What kind of support do you need in a mattress? Pressure relief will likely top your list of necessary features.
  • Side sleepers, back sleepers, stomach sleepers (or combination sleepers) connect with their mattresses differently. What firmness level will support the contact points between you and your mattress? Do any specific pressure points on your body need more or less support?
  • Are you a hot sleeper? Do you need a mattress made of breathable material (ie a cooling mattress) to allow for maximum air circulation?
  • Do you have any allergies? For example, a latex allergy will rule out any type of mattress that uses natural latex. A mattress cover (for example an organic cotton cover) is helpful as a quick and easy way to wash dust and allergens that have landed on your mattress.

Do Mattress Companies Take Returns?

Believe it or not, YES. Many do! As you research your preferred mattress type, one thing that I highly recommend paying particular attention to: the mattress warranty. Some companies offer 100 night trial periods so that you can truly get to know your new mattress. If you are not satisfied with the mattress at the end of the trial, you can return it for a refund.

Not all companies offer such a generous policy, so make sure you research before you buy.

Short Queen Bed Sheets

Oh – and don’t forget about RV mattress sheets!! Check out our round up with lots of options for short queen sheet sets that will fit your new RV mattress. Sure, you can use standard queen size sheets on your short queen mattress, but it won’t be a perfect fit and the sheets will move around as you sleep. I don’t know about you – but I hate when my sheets come off the mattress while I sleep! Consider checking out some sheets that are made specifically to fit your short queen size mattress.

  1. Thanks so very much for the info. I am remodeling an old
14ft camper trailer. I wanted to put a real mattress but did not know where to find a short version of it they even existed. I am so excited now, especially to see that they are affordable!

I really appreciate the other items you featured. It would have taken years of camping to think of searching for them. You made my day!

    • Oooo, that’s a really good question. Unfortunately for those beds, an upgrade to a traditional mattress might be more difficult because of that corner cut. You’d either have to deal with a mattress lopping into the walkway (not ideal) or maybe skip the mattress and try a memory foam mattress topper instead? You could possibly trim or fold down the corner on those?

      • Or you could buy a Queen sized full memory foam mattress (make sure there are ZERO springs in the mattress), and cut to fit the bed shape. Just partially remove the outer cover and use a long serrated bread knife (we used an electric knife -the kind you slice up a turkey with!) or a saw to slice through the foam. Once you have it cut to size, either hand sew or fabric glue the cover back into place! It’s an easy fix for a better sleep experience!
        Best of luck!

        • You can also go to your local mom and pop mattress manufacturer (such as Leisure Mattress in Boise) and have them make you a custom shape and/or size. The quality is pretty good and often cheaper than a major manufacturer. You can probably also find something with a Google search.

  2. I never knew there was a “short” queen for trailers. I wish I would of known this when we replaced the original mattress. The one we have is just a little to long.

  3. Unfortunately our mattress “folds” up when the slide out is in. It literally has a bend in it to allow for slide out to come in. I imagine we’d have to go with a mattress topper as well unless there are suggestions.

    • At home we have a memory foam mattress on an electric base that can almost fold in half. If you get one of the thinner memory foam options like the 6inch sinus they suggested it might be able to fold!

    • Hinged mattresses are available. Check out TOCHTA or Brooklyn Bedding. They will put the hinge in your mattress for an additional cost. They also offer a 10 year warranty. TOCHTA even does free shipping!

  4. Hi! Anyone know the best place to short queen mattress and platform for it? Of course we’re in a rush. Previous owners had two beds put together and we just want to replace that… and the worn out couch, for a sleeper sofa. Any suggestions would be great. Lower cost, the better.

    THANK YOU!!

      • Lol… everything’s a rush with us. On west coast and heading to east coast to see fam. Leaving on 20th… clearly not good at planning.

Thank you very much!! Will take a look there.

  5. My current mattress on my Rockwood is uncomfortable. After extensive research it appears my only option to improving my mattress is a foam or euro foam which I hate! Those type of mattresses absorb me amd I can’t get out of the bed. What other options are there for a good quality mattress that is not foam?

    • Did you ever find a mattress that suits you? My husband has the same problem, hates foam because he can’t roll over on it. Thanks.
